Expert Tips to Speed Up Spring Cleaning

The arrival of spring means warmer weather, more sunshine, singing birds, and — of course — spring cleaning. However, this doesn’t have to be a negative thing. Spring cleaning is a chance to tidy up your home and get a fresh start.

You don’t have to let spring cleaning put a damper on your mood. If you follow these expert tips, you’ll be able to enter the spring season feeling renewed, refreshed, and reorganized.

Put Together a Schedule

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by spring cleaning, but it doesn’t have to be that way. To make spring cleaning easier to handle, sit down and make a schedule. Cleaning your entire house can be intimidating but breaking the project down into smaller goals will make it seem manageable.

Write down all the tasks you want to accomplish and put them in order. If you’re spreading out the spring cleaning process over a couple of days (or more), set goals for each day.

Cross off each task as you accomplish it. Not only will this help you stay on target and on schedule, but it will keep you motivated as well.

Clean One Room at a Time

When you’re cleaning your house, it’s often most effective to tackle one room at a time. When you’re making your cleaning list and schedule, consider breaking it up by room. Make a list for each room and check things off as you do them.

You’ll probably have different priorities for each room. For instance, in the bathroom or kitchen, you might want to focus on scrubbing and deep cleaning, while the goals in the bedroom or living room might be geared more toward organization, dusting, vacuuming, and sorting.

Declutter

It’s easier to clean when you have less stuff. It’s also easier for everything to stay clean when you’re not surrounded by clutter. Rather than just moving things around from room to room (or from drawer to drawer or closet to closet), try to declutter as part of the spring cleaning process.

Make four piles: Put away, store, donate, and throw out.

The things in the “put away” pile are items that you use on a regular basis. Put these in easy-to-access places so they’ll be there when you need them, but out of sight when you don’t.

Items that go into the “store” pile are ones that you use, but not very often. These can be put into basement closets, storage rooms, attics, etc.

Things that are in good condition but that you don’t use anymore can be donated. You may also want to consider selling them online or at a yard sale if you have the time and think they’ll be of any value.

The final pile is the junk pile. Anything that’s broken, damaged, or worn out can go in this pile. If you can’t use it and you don’t think anyone else could use it, throw it away or recycle it if possible.

Give Everything a Home

As a part of the spring cleaning process, try to give everything in your house a “home.” This means you should have a place where each item goes when it’s not being used. If everything has a place, then keeping your home clean becomes easier. You won’t need to shove things into a random drawer when you’re trying to tidy up, and you won’t have to frantically search for things when you need them.

Giving everything a home makes daily life easier and keeps your home not only looking its best, but it also keeps things running smoothly.

Have Fun

Spring cleaning doesn’t have to be a joyless chore! There are plenty of ways to make it more fun. Put on some music to improve your mood and give yourself an energy boost. Open the windows and let some light and fresh air in.

Get the whole family involved as well. Divide up tasks and “challenge” each other to get things done. This will boost your mood and make the process feel more like a game and less like a chore. When you’re done, celebrate with a movie night, a special dinner, or in any other way you’d like. You deserve it!

This is a positive and hopeful time. One of the best parts of spring cleaning is that you’ll be left with a home that’s more relaxing and comfortable to live in.

By following these tips, your spring cleaning will be done sooner, and your home will be clean and organized for the rest of the year!
